What to do in Calaguas: Day hike to Small Baguio

$

There are many ways to have a wonderful time in the islands of Calaguas, including camping waterfront and a day hike to the steep hills of Small Baguio.

When you think of what to do in Mahabang Buhangin (Long Beach) in Tinaga Island, one of the major islands of Calaguas, your itinerary for the most part might involve marine activities. Obviously, the beautiful stretch of a beach calls for playful time in and along the water. But if you feel a sudden urge to break away from the shore, take a quick, enjoyable, and easy hike to Small Baguio.

If you look at the Google map, Small Baguio is pinned as Tourist Services Calaguas Island. Located in the heart of Barangay Mangcauayan, it is approximately a 20 minute walk from the Mahabang Buhangin.

How to get to Small Baguio from Mahabang Buhangin (Long Beach)

From the beachfront, walk past the Nipa hut cottages to the direction of rest room and exit from the bamboo fence to your right. And follow the trail to your left. You'll see more Nipa hut cottages. Past this, you'll see an open grass field.

To be honest it is difficult to give direction because the trail has no signs (yet) BUT don't get me wrong, the path is easy to figure out. So, when you follow the trail and get to the end of the short narrow cemented road, turn to your left. Less than a few minute walk you'll see this makeshift bamboo bridge:

Makeshift bamboo bridge to Small Baguio in Calaguas

Cross this bridge and go to your right. Stay on the trail. You might need to weave through waist-deep grasses. It's all right. A little more walking and you'll see the entrance to Small Baguio.

"Smoll Baguio". Pardon the misspelling!

The P20 entrance fee and a climb uphill

The hike to Small Baguio is quite an easy one, even senior citizens can get there. In fact, there is no fee for the elderly. Yey! For others, P20 fee is collected at the entrance.

I'm guessing this place is called Small Baguio albeit misspelled due to the produce planted on its sloped hillside. Or possibly because "Baguio" is a name we associate to high places and the travel to Baguio entails hours of a drive uphill. I suspect it is the latter!

The view from Small Baguio

After minutes of steep ascent, you'll arrive at the top of the hill. There are  two Nipa hut cottages here, as well as makeshift bamboo benches. You can do picnic or barbecuing as long as you clean up once you are done.

At the top of Small Baguio, you can get an awe-inspiring view of the blue skies, the vast ocean, and the lush entirety of Barangay Mangcauayan. Time seems to slow down here.

Day hike tips

1. If you plan to go to Small Baguio right after lunch, make sure you bring a hat or umbrella to protect your skin from the sun. Sunscreen is not enough as the sun rays could get excruciating. In my case, I used my Muji hat and sarong to cover my skin.

2. Bring water and some snack to binge on. I suggest fruit slices!

3. Do not wear trainers unless you're all prepared to get them soaked in mud. My blogger friends use Sandugo sandals and I think this type of footwear is best. I used Havaianas flipflops I bought in Capalonga market for P50 haha They are imitation Havaianas for sure!

4. Take loads of photos and when you're done, take a few more!

Parting Words

When you visit Calaguas, spare P20 pesos and 20 minutes of your time to take a short distance hike to Small Baguio. The walk from the beachfront through the open field trail and the view from the hilltop are equally awe-inspiring!

The 3 Most Stunning Places to Visit in Northern Vietnam

$
0
0

Northern Vietnam is probably one of the most diverse areas in Southeast Asia in terms of culture, culinary, and traditions, not only because of its history, but also the fact that each region covers a different setting and feeling when you visit it.

From the charming flatlands of the capital city of Hanoi, to the towering limestone islands of world wonder Halong Bay, and to the heavenly sceneries of the mountainous region of Sapa Town, these destinations can definitely be considered as the top three places to visit when in northern Vietnam.

Hanoi: Where the street culture thrives

The capital city of Hanoi has been regarded before as one of the cheapest cities to visit as a traveler by lifestyle guides and websites. Even up to this day, we believe it is still true due to the fact that there’s been an increase in numbers of visitors over the last 12 months. And that’s not the only reason why this place is considered stunning.

Aside from it being incredibly affordable and cheap for a lot of people, Hanoi also boasts thousands of years old history and undeniably picturesque scenery in every corner you look. In addition to the French colonial architecture, rich green landscapes, peaceful lakes, and friendly locals, this vibrant city also is known for its street food culture, which is one of the reasons why millions of tourists flock to the capital year in and year out.

Divided into two major areas, Hanoi’s Old Quarter and French Quarter are where it’s all happening, especially during the weekends, when all major roads surrounding HoanKiem Lake are closed only for pedestrians. Music shows, visual artists, performances, concerts, art classes, dance classes, and other fun activities can be enjoyed by both tourists and locals during these days; an initiative that brought so much buzz in the tourism and hospitality sector across Southeast Asia.

Apart from the fun activities, Hanoi also is the place to learn more about what Vietnam is really all about as a country. Whether its visiting the Temple of Literature (the very first and oldest university in the country), the Women’s Museum (a whole building dedicated to all the Vietnamese women and their functions across the 54 minorities in the country), the Ethnology Museum (showcases the 54 Vietnamese minorities, their cultures, and traditions), or the Museum of Fine Arts in Hanoi, which houses most of the biggest names in the local art scene, there are so much places to visit and learn about this promised land.

Halong Bay: Vietnam’s most prized possession

Named twice as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and as one of the 7 New Wonders of Nature just a few years after, there is no doubt that Halong Bay has made quite a reputation not only in the region, but also all over the globe. Made up of about 1,969 limestone islands formed throughout hundreds or even thousands of years, You can travel from Hanoi to Halong Bay in no time, witnessing Halong Bay for the very first time is like being in a dream or a sci-fi movie. The unworldly feeling that you get upon opening your eyes to what’s right in front of you is somehow an experience that you’d have to go through at least once in your lifetime.

And if this place being a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a World Wonder not enough reasons for you to visit for yourself, then there’s definitely more reasons to do so. One very good reason to visit Halong Bay during your trip to northern Vietnam is to experience the beauty of the bay by waking up from a traditional junk boat. Halong Bay cruises, being the main highlight and activity in the area can vary from budget to luxury. Of course, the more you pay for your overnight cruise, the better your experience will be. So be sure to bring some extra cash during your trip as Halong Bay is definitely not really a budget-friendly destination, unless you opt to stay in Cat Ba Island, the largest and most populated island in the Gulf of Tonkin, one part of the Halong Bay.

As for other things to do in Halong Bay, there’s the city districts that offer all sorts of land activities; these activities, include cable car rides across the islands for a panoramic view of the bay from above, a Ferris wheel overlooking the bay and the city, shopping for local goods and produce in the central market, or the upcoming theme park by the beach. One of the best things you could do though when in Halong City is to visit the QuangNinh Museum, the most stunning architecture in the area with Halong Bay as its charming backdrop. Designed by a renowned Spanish architect, the building also serves as the province’s community library perfect for those who want to learn more about Halong Bay’s culture and history.

Sapa Town: A glimpse into the mountainous tribes

Once a quiet town by the mountains bordering China and Vietnam, Sapa Town earned its popularity amongst tourists because of its cold weather, colorful markets, unique culture that cannot be found elsewhere in the country, and the spectacular views that overlook the plunging valley below. And in most times, the epic views of these surrounding mountains are covered in thick mist that creates a magical feeling to it.

For those travelers who like trekking and adventure tours, then Sapa is the perfect place for it. With at least three to four tribes to visit in the neighborhood, there are so many options to go for. But out of all the choices you’ll have while in town, the most popular for the extreme adventure travelers is trekking Fansipan mountain, the highest point of Indochina. But before you step outside your hotel room and head to the entrance of the mountain, it’s highly advised to bring a tour guide with you as the climb can be a treacherous. A good number of companies are available for queries and information are available in town, so make sure you come prepare before going on an adventure.

As for those who are traveling with their families or just want to have a more relaxing trek whilst enjoying the peaceful landscapes, then an overnight homestay inside a village experience is the best option. The same as the climb to Fansipan, there are also heaps of tour companies that offer this kind of service. Just make sure to check their credibility and always best to ask for recommendations from people you know or other tourists who have done it as well.

Parting Words

Northern Vietnam is a true gem especially for those who haven’t been to Vietnam or Southeast Asia for that matter. Blessed by the land, the sea, and the mountains, this region is something to be highly considered when in Vietnam. No wonder why millions of tourists come to the country to witness these wonders for themselves before it gets overdeveloped in the coming years!

What do you think about Northern Vietnam? Would you like to visit this part of Southeast Asia? Let us know your thoughts on the comments section below! Thank you for reading. Don't forget to share this article!

Ultimate guide on how to feel like a local in Los Angeles

$

It’s easy to be star-struck by Los Angeles itself, without even mentioning a chance encounter with a celebrity that lives in this iconic city. The City of Angels has been depicted, interpreted and miss-interpreted on the silver screen so many times that it is hard to step onto its sidewalk without a particular sense of trepidation, mostly rooted in sheer awe.

However, if you have already seen the most iconic locations that serve as a rite of passage for newcomers, you might just want to try and blend in with the residents. If you are interested in how to accomplish this, here are ten ways to feel like a local in Los Angeles.

Food Choices

If you want to start feeling like a Los Angeles resident, eat as the locals do. Juicy burgers and doughnuts are a staple of the city of stars, and it is easy to go gaga over Mexican cuisine too. This can sound jarringly paradoxical considering how renowned this city is for its health obsession, but this is where the beauty of local burgers lies – they take them very seriously and therefore offer some of the tastiest burgers of unparalleled quality.

Gruyère is one of those places that are at the top of many people’s lists as it is home to the best blue cheese and bacon burger in town. Father’s Office boasts delicious burgers with sweet onion jam. As far as Mexican food goes, most of the locals will recommend Nina’s Mexican Food on Sawtelle Boulevard. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, Kettle Glazed offers some of the most outlandish doughnuts in town, and Bob’s Coffee & Donuts offers the quintessential sugar-sweet experience.

Meditation Sessions

Once you take a look at the endless Pacific Horizon and the towering San Gabriel Mountains, it becomes obvious why mediation is such a popular activity in Los Angeles. It is just so much easier to find your inner peace amidst such beautiful scenery. As you may well know, there are many ways to approach meditation; most studios offer their own staple methods that come with a fee and a schedule, but Unplug Meditation offers an amazing drop-in option.

If you want to feel like a local, you can just show up whenever you like and feel comfortable. The studio has gained quite a traction due to the fact that it offers classes for every level, even the biggest rookies, and you can drop-in, casually, any time of day.

If you are in the shopping mood

Grand Central Market

Shopping and sightseeing is the best combo that will both help you feel like a local and experience new things. As you divide your time between visits to important cultural sights organized by DMC Los Angeles and impromptu shopping sprees, you will manage to capture the smells, tastes and feel of L.A. in an unprecedented manner.

Blend in with the locals by browsing through Los Angeles County Store. It is filled with artisans, wares and accessories, and you will definitely find a unique souvenir there. Max and Moritz is another amazing boutique situated in West Hollywood. Of course, you can always visit Grand Central Market in downtown L.A. for a bustling mingle through the crowds in an informal shopping spree. The market itself underwent a huge revamp several years ago, and it offers some of the most interesting and exotic dining options in town.

So many beaches

On the one hand, you have not been to Los Angeles unless you have paid a visit to Zuma Beach and Paradise Cove. On the other hand, it is very popular among the locals, so you are welcome to feel at home as you strut on its softs sands north of Malibu.

However, if you do not want to feel like a naïve visitor, it would be better if you avoided tourist infested regions of Santa Monica and Venice. Spending a few hours at a calm and hidden beach might be exactly the thing you need to decompress. You can always venture even further north to visit the picturesque coasts of Topanga State Park. Additionally, you can always go on a walking trail along Lake Hollywood Reservoir. It will give you a whole new perspective on the Hollywood sign.

As far as shows go

Broadway Theatre District

Here is something that will definitely not surprise you – Los Angeles is filled with exceptionally talented people that flock into this city from every corner of the world. Many famous stars have started their career on a stage in the Broadway Theater District, so why not catch a show and get a chance to brag about seeing a famous celebrity in an intimate environment before they shot to stardom?

Additionally, Los Angeles has venues with comedy shows around every corner, and some of the talents hidden in these dimly lit joints are quite amazing. If you want to feel like a local, make sure to go out on the town and enjoy some of the plays and comedy shows “on the menu”.

Parting Words

So many locations of Los Angeles are scorched into our irises and brains, it is hard to resist visiting them and spending most of the time thinking about how our lives would look if we lived in this coastline city.

However, when the star-struck magnet within us stops pulling us to iconic buildings and landmarks, we realize that Los Angeles is truly a city with a beating heart – with cracks and crevices which are genuine and which give it a touch of warmth and familiarity. This side of Los Angeles is just as easy to fall in love with as its more famous locales.

Novuhair Journey: Second month hair update

Outfit by Tres Belle Manila

With all the stress of the holidays, I thought I'd be losing more hair than usual. Also, I was expecting a bit more dandruff. Lack of sleep and overwhelming mixed emotions tend to bring out both the best and the bad in my hair and scalp. But hey! It's my second month with Novuhair! Has my hair condition changed?

If you have been following my hair care series, you'd know that I am on my second month with Novuhair.

Again, you might think that my hair is already thick and need not be "thickened". But if you just see the amount of hair that fall from my head after shower, you'd probably understand!

My hair woes

After showering, I used to have excessive hair fall. This worsens after hair treatments like hair rebonding.

A month ago, I had my annual rebonding with brazilian blow out. If I were to compare the condition of my hair strands last year, I'd say this time it has improved.

Aside from hair fall, I also experience itchy scalp brought by pesky dandruff. I believe this is due to the overall stress I cause to my body.  But these days, though I wouldn't say I am dandruff free, I am relieved my dandruff was reduced significantly!

Second month with Novuhair

It's finally time to bid 2017 goodbye, and the month of December specifically, I am glad that I am free from my hair woes.

I am now ready to face 2018 with healthier and happier hair and scalp! Thank you so much Novuhair!

What are your hair woes? Have you found the hair care product that is right for your hair? Have you tried any Novuhair products? Let me know your thoughts below!

7 benefits of visiting a Science Museum in Singapore

ArtScience Museum Singapore, Photo by Zac Ong

Science museums are often integrated in school-organized trips due to educational benefit. Families also find visiting museums fun. Enjoying while absorbing academic information, however, only scratches the surface of what a visit to a Science museum can offer both to adults and children.

Heading off to a Science museum is actually doing more than just teaching information.

Here are seven benefits you could get from visiting a Science museum in Singapore:

1. Real-life exposure to the magnificence of science

Considering the scientific and technological inventions turned into life by Singaporean innovators, which serve as the pride of the locales–not only regionally but also on the international grounds–it is inevitable not to notice that Singapore is definitely a home for both the development of the already existing scientific knowledge and individuals who actually aspire to explore more of what science itself is meant to unravel.

This simple observation brings us to the intriguing idea, “What is it that Singapore has that had been the reason behind all these well-recognized science-based improvements?”

To be honest, there are countless reasons as to how can this distinct sort of affection for Science be awaken, but as for those Singaporeans who have already proven that this field of study breathes in the very essence of their core, something can be clearly seen that they all have in common, and that is exposure – the medium for proficiency in all fields.

Having that said, a visit to a Science Museum in Singapore is not only an opportunity but is actually a great privilege to get exposed to both scientific artifacts and what science can possibly offer in the future. Here, you can explore a possible inclination you have for science.

2. Entitlement to the support for the rising inventors, innovators, and scientists of Singapore

We all know that Science museums are a place for exhibiting how your lessons on your Biology, Chemistry, and Physics Class may actually be put into an application - be it practical or scientific. These exhibits showcase both the process and the output seen in the works of the nation’s inventors, innovators, and scientists.

In Singapore, more than learning the explanations in integrated mediums about the basic facts and principles behind such as how a pendulum unstoppably sways as long as its left alone and what keeps the essential resources around us into stability - you will also be able to witness how Singaporean creations have been able to initiate industrial and technological revolutions and evolution, how their works serve as a worthy contribution to the progress and the mere living of one’s community.

By being able to witness these things, you are also doing one more thing- that, of course, is supporting those Singaporeans who have been the reason behind those.

3. The award that is “Preservers of Science”

Going to a museum means a lot more than just you paying for the pass (if there’s any) and being able to wander inside on a probably ‘unusual’ place for you.

Your actual existence there means so much more- entering the museum also means that you’re ‘giving life’ into it- into the museum, into the treasures and collections of Science that it all stores inside, and of course, to the actual purpose that all the science museum has at their very core- that of which is to preserve the ever-glowing essence of learning Science itself, together with all the milestones it has attained which have sustained innumerable necessities to human living as of now.

Especially now in the age where learning the seemingly complicated parts of Science don’t sound as worthy as the science tuition itself.

But you know what’s the most awesome form of preservation that’s happening while you’re inside a museum? Is that it actually preserves not only the role of Science in the community but utmost, the role of science in you and in your life.

4. Development of world-changing aspirations

If there’s any place that could better build up individuals’, especially, the youth’s aspirations aligned in the field of Science, than the school or through your science tutor, that would probably be nothing else than a Science museum itself.

In Singapore, wherein the development of Science and Technology serves as one of the major concerns of the Government, the greatest challenge museums such as this face is how they would be able to cope with the ever improving means of partaking knowledge to the community.

Well, as of now- they’re doing it well. Continually planting the seeds of world-changing aspirations in forms of variety in all of its visitors. In Science museums you get to enjoy without being guilty of the time you "wasted".

5. Involvement with the community of intellectuals

A must-not-miss advice for intellectual people who wants to ‘socialize’:

“Looking for individuals with the same or of with higher intellect than you presently are? Go to a Science Museum.”

If you’re longing for a deep conversation about all the science-related curiosity that you have deep inside, apparently you have only one most convenient place for your option- and that is a Science Museum.

6. A smarter you

If you want to surprise your Science Tutor on his/her next visit, going into and actually appreciating what a Science museum has in store for you is a great way to start your journey of future A’s on your Science classes and tutoring sessions.

“That’s clearly a hyperbole”’, you might think… But it’s not.

Because do you know what all these great scientists in your country have in common? Enthusiasm for Science. And that’s what a Science museum aims to develop in you while you’re inside.

7. Relaxed mind and the ever sought emotion of ”feeling good”

Escaping from the every day countless demands that our responsibilities try to milk from us, we often forget to give ourselves the break that we deserve.

With a Science museum chosen to accompany you during your recreation, you get the opportunity to appreciate how far we’ve gone in terms of progress, and how far are we still able to move forward, utmost how fortunate you are for being able to have this moment of your life - staying still, purely appreciating what you might have missed all along.

Parting Words

A visit to a Science museum has numerous benefits that go beyond fun and learning. It contributes to your well-being, to the welfare of your community, and ultimately, to the progress of the whole country.

So the next time you spend your recreation, make room for scientific exploration and discovery and spend an hour or more in a Science museum!

Top reasons to visit the Philippines on a vacation

Why should anyone come to the Philippines on vacation?

Many time people think that traveling the Philippines is only for specific kinds of people. Most of the foreigners on vacation I met here were backpackers, traveling around with nothing but their bag, and looking for the best deals on accommodation and attractions. The other kind I usually see in selected places are honeymooners, looking for a Maldives like vacation for a fraction of the price.

Other than that it's really difficult to spot families, or just travelers who aren't backpacking, and like sightseeing. I think it all a matter of being misinformed, because I think our country has so much to offer to tourists of any kind. In this post I'm going to give you my recommendations for any type of traveler. So keep on reading and prepare for the elimination of any doubt you had regarding your future vacation to the Philippines.

The lovebirds

The big distinction between honeymooners to couples on "just" a romantic vacation, is usually the amount of money they're willing to spend. But what will be the perfect destinations for a couple who don't want to break the bank? Is it still possible to enjoy your time in the Philippines like that?

I'd say that my first pick is Malapascua. Why is that so you ask? Well, though it's mainly known as a divers' island, it has some obvious reasons for people who are on the search for some romance. I think that a place that offers you privacy, regardless of the season. It needs to have nice beaches which aren't crowded, some intimate resorts and good restaurants.

Malapascua Island is just that. It's quiet because it's secluded, so not many people other than divers go there. And the divers usually go scuba diving all day long, which leaves the beaches quite empty. There are no cars on Malapascua just to explain how quiet it is. There are a few restaurants, like Angelina restaurant – a great Italian place, and Ocean Vida – where you can select between international and local classics.

There are quite a few boutique resorts there, where you can enjoy your time together and not spend too much. Check it out, in this resort you can find everything you might need for a romantic vacation, specialty spa, Jacuzzi, privacy, unique restaurant, and just 200 meters from the beach. That's not bad for only P5000 (about $100)!

The perfect honeymoon

I don't think I'll be the first to say that you could have a Maldives like vacation, in no other than El Nido. After visiting the Maldives I can say that El Nido isn't yet there, in terms of service and resorts' level. However it's not falling far behind in these fields and not falling behind at all when it comes to beauty.

The private island resorts are just heavenly, just a few cottages on secluded islands with no outsiders allowed. On the islands you'll find everything you ever wished for on your honeymoon – great food, breathtaking views, white sand beaches and numerous activities like island hopping, diving, kayaking, snorkeling and more.

It's really difficult to choose between the islands, and very difficult to come by someone who visited all of them (Miniloc, Matinloc, Lagen, Vellago, Pangulasian, Apulit). In this sense I
believe it's best to go to a good local travel agency who can really assist you with that. It will also remove the hardship of coordinating the transfers and the pickups yourself, and there will be someone there to assist you if something goes wrong. It will guarantee a great honeymoon, and as you're only going to have it once in your life so it might as well be perfect.

Also, when I come to think of it, there is one clear advantage to the Philippines over the Maldives. That in El Nido, you're not going to get bored for a second. If you want to go to town for a visit, or just explore the mainland, it's very much possible. There is so much more going on there compared to the Maldives, in which your whole vacation concludes to your resort.

Backpacking in the Philippines

There is no definite answer to where is the best place to travel to in the Philippines as a backpacker. All places are actually kind of great for backpacking, so I'll try to define what make a place appealing to this kind of tourists. I think that first and for most it has to be affordable. After that it needs to have lots of attraction suitable for groups and it needs to have a fun and young atmosphere.

The immediate places that come to my mind are Siargao and Moalboal. Both are relatively easy to travel to even on a low budget, and packed with exciting activities and adventures. On top of that, these places are as young as it gets, as their vibrant nature draws tons of young people.

Let's start with Siargao. If you're on a budget, and didn't manage to secure a flight much in advance (a ticket from Manila can be as low as $40 when booked long in advance), there is a very cheap way to get to Siargao. There is a night ferry from Cebu City to Surigao, and then another short one to Siargao. This place is still very cheap compared to other destinations in the Philippines, and one can find a room for P500 only ($10), and a bed in a dorm as low as P250!

Besides of surfing, which is obviously what Siargao is known for, there are so many thing you can do there. There is one of the most beautiful island hopping tours in the Philippines, Sugba Lagoon with stingless jellyfish, and Magpupungko Tidal Pools. This place is just really breathtaking and you better enjoy the low prices while you still can, because it's getting popular!

Moalboal is another great place, pretty much for the same reasons as Siargao. It is young and cheap, and that's the base for Kawasan Falls, one of the most exciting tours in the Philippines. There is also some of the best snorkeling in the country, with the highlight being the sardine runs you can snorkel and dive with.

The perfect family vacation

What make it difficult to travel the Philippines as a family, and by that I mean traveling with children, is the commuting. Getting to many places here is just so difficult and painstaking. However some destinations are just easy to get to, and once there, you find that the resorts are very suitable for families. The best place I can think of is Mactan.

What more could you ask for? You land 15-30 minutes from you resort. And once there, you find everything you need, with number of restaurants, pools, and bars in-house. There is a private beach also, and abundance of water sports and activities too. Oh, and there are many activities for the kids too, which will keep them entertained and will give you some peace and quiet.

Which are these resorts I'm talking about? I think the Crimson Resort is one of the best value for money ones. It offers all of the said above and you don't pay as in other places. Bluewater Maribago is also a favorite in Mactan, and if you have a YOLO mentality, so you can go for Plantation Bay – probably the best resort in Mactan.

The perfect sightseeing vacation for active people

This is an easy one. Batanes. I think that the best spot for people who like to see a lot on their trip can really enjoy Batanes. The landscapes are amazing, and there are so many places you can trek to and visit, or to it by tricycle. It's also an opportunity to come to see the local Ivatan culture, that unlike so many other places in the Philippines, still has a strong presence.

I think that seeing the lighthouses, visiting Vayang and Marlboro rolling hills and the deserted stone village is great fun. The beaches and the views are breathtaking and like no other place in the Philippines. If Batanes is paired with the more "classic" destinations like Bohol or Boracay, you will feel like you really got a lot from your trip, especially if you're the type that loves sightseeing.

Yerevan

Yerevan is a very small city, and you can go around the entire center in an hour. It makes no sense to list all its attractions, let’s talk about some favorite places of all the tourists.

•    The Cascade

It is a unique staircase, where modern art is presented. Go upstairs, the whole city is wide open from there, and if you are lucky with the weather, you will see Mount Ararat.

•    Republic Square

It is the central square of Yerevan. Here are the most prestigious hotels, and in the summer, you will be able to watch a show of fountains in the evenings.

•    Vernissage

This is a kind of a flea market. Here you can buy souvenirs, ethnic jewelry, traditional Armenian clothing, carpets, musical instruments, dishes, paintings and even pets. You can come here just to feel the charm of the country, and, of course, you will hardly leave it empty-handed.

•    Restaurant Dolmama

It has been working since 1998. It is quite popular among locals and foreigners. It was visited by some stars and politicians, for example, Prince Charles and Kim Kardashian. You will like it both for author's Armenian cuisine and a chic interior in ethnic style. It is quite expensive, compared to other restaurants in Yerevan, but it's worth it.

•    Northern Avenue

This is the street where you can find trendy cafes and expensive shops. Many people love this place in the evenings when young people go out for a walk. Quite often, you can meet street musicians who play national music, and local youth who starts dancing. Armenians are very fond of their folk dance and show it on the appropriate occasion.

The top Armenia destinations you should not miss

Armenia is a country of mountains, fields, rivers, and lakes. You should better rent a car or a minibus with a driver and go on a trip.

1. Khor Virap (40 km from Yerevan)

It is the Armenian monastery that is located on the border with Turkey. Its charm lies in the fact that it offers an incredible view of Mount Ararat.

2. Noravank (117 km from Yerevan)

It is another monastery with an incredible view. You will be impressed by the road leading through the gorge to Noravank.

3. Zorats-Kareer (204 km from Yerevan)

It is a kind of Armenian Stonehenge, but it was built earlier. You should watch the sunset over there. The ruins look magical when the golden rays of the sun seep through them.

4. Monastery Tatev (251 km from Yerevan)

Perhaps, the most beautiful views of mountain part of Armenia open from the cable car that leads to the monastery. This cable car was built not so long ago (in 2010) and is considered the longest in the world (5.752 meters.)

5. Tashir (154 km from Yerevan)

It is the city, located near the border with Georgia. It’s definitely worth going there to see the mountains, rivers, and fields. This is an ideal place for nature lovers. On the way from Yerevan to Tashir, visit the town of Aparan and buy fresh bread matnakash that is straight from the oven. It will be cooked on you.

6. Lake Sevan (67 km from Yerevan)

It is one of the most beautiful lakes in the world.

Some tips for your travel to Armenia

•    Do not be afraid to talk to strangers! Armenians are very hospitable and friendly.
•    Always have cash. Yerevan is an advanced city, however, taxi and most small shops do not accept credit cards. The situation could be worse outside the main city.
•    The best time for traveling to Armenia is spring and early summer. It's already warm, and everything is blooming and blossoming.

When location grants you spectacular Ocean views like Papillon’s, designers are compelled to incorporate them at every possible instance. In this case, architects have executed it to perfection. The living room, lounge, foyer, kitchen, dining room, spa, gym, and all nine air-conditioned bedrooms open to an amazing view of the Sea, a feat that proves the careful consideration of every detail. The interior shared spaces feature modern, minimalistic-chic decor and high-end electronics. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open to the terrace, ensuring the easy flow of fresh Ocean breeze. If you’re feeling like a relaxing night inside, treat yourself to a lovely spa experience, or kick-back in the air-conditioned home theatre and enjoy the latest movies from a plush recliner. If the night has more of a group dynamic, the formal dining area seats twelve, the kitchen comes with a breakfast bar, and there’s plenty more room for hosting on the terrace.

Outside, a twenty-five-meter infinity pool mirrors the sea. Watch the magnificent Phuket sunset from the terrace deck or lounge in the pool while sipping on a cocktail prepared for you by the six full-time staff. Whether the whole group is gathering together, or you’re looking for a secluded spot to enjoy some alone time, the terrace has plenty of furnished living and dining areas, hammocks, lounge chairs, and balconies to enjoy the Ocean view.

If there’s a golf aficionado in your group, they are in luck. There are five courses within a forty-minute drive. If the city is more your style, visit Phuket’s Old Town for boutique shopping, coffee shops, art galleries, restaurants, and nightlife, all tucked into beautiful heritage buildings.

The kEATchen: 17 food stalls, 34 dishes to try in this Food Park in Taytay, Rizal

Us bloggers (The Girl with the Muji Hat & Travel with Maria) and them the friendly The KEATchen staff

A lot of food parks are popping out in and outside Metro Manila with different food concepts and food choices. This just shows people's undying love for food and Filipinos' endless creativity! In Taytay, Rizal, The kEATchen is the first food park to open to cater to all types of food cravings. The cooking starts at 4pm it says! But what is cooking? What food should you try when you come here? It is our goal to find out!

It was a few days before my birthday when I got the invitation to review this food park. The owner asked when I was available, but since the rest of the days were booked, I only had Tuesday as a free day because well, it's my birthday! Apparently, The kEATchen FOOD PARK needs to have a proper review as it had just opened a few months back. So I immediately asked my blogger friend to accompany me, Maria Rona Beltran of Travels with Maria as she is an expert when it comes to food tasting and photographing food. So off we went!

Before our food park experience, we also had the chance to try out NUYU SPA. Check out our Nuyu Spa experience here.

The food, the food stalls, and the food park people

The kEATchen food park is divided into four sections (as per my observation). I included the left and right balconies. But in actuality, it's just the first floor where live bands perform, and the second floor with more food shops and dining area.

As you may see in the photos, the inside of the food park is quite nice. The ambiance is as happy as its staff. The place is spacious and seems ready for a large crowd. I was expecting a bit of chaos actually because I know food parks can be jam-packed and that people could walk in all directions. Luckily, this place is far from stressful. I can say that it remains a cozy ambiance even when people swarm here.

I have mentioned that live bands perform in this food park. You can check The kEATchen Food Park Facebook Page for updates on which artists are invited to perform. I know they have a surprise in store for you these coming days so better like their official page.

First floor space: you can see Boybabs PH, Ichinori, Stics, and Greek Freak on the background.
The upper deck offers more room for booze!

How I Got my Japan Tourist Visa in the Philippines

$
0
0

[UPDATED: January 2018] I tried to re-apply for Japan Tourist Visa for my trip this coming October. Again, I submitted all the required documents to Reli Tours & Travel Agency and got my passport back 3 days after!

Here are some changes I noticed:

(1) I didn't need to submit NSO birth certificate this time (Birth certificate section in my application form was marked "with old used visa")
(2) I only paid Php 2000 to the agency. Last time it was Php 2500? Also, I found out that if you apply with NO GUARANTOR, you will just pay PHP 950.00
(3) I was granted 15 days of stay - shorter compared to last time which was 30 days.
(4) I was really hoping to get a multiple entry visa but I still got single entry. Of course I'm still grateful they didn't deny my application. Here's how to get Multiple Entry Visa

Japan VISA requirement has been lifted for citizens of several Southeast Asian countries. Unfortunately, we aren't included on the list. Filipinos still need to apply for a tourist VISA in order to visit Japan. But fret not. The application process has been "relaxed". It's less strict these days. In fact, I tried applying and I succeeded!

So how did I get my JAPAN TOURIST VISA?

To get the VISA you have to file your application through an accredited agency. You have to submit all the requirements and pay the application fee.

Click here for the list of requirements.
Click here for the list of accredited agencies.

DOCUMENTS TO SUBMIT:

In my case, I submitted these documents to RELI TOURS in SM MEGAMALL:

1. Philippine Passport - Passport should be in good condition. To quote: "broken lamination of the photo part is not accepted. Must have signature and have at least two (2) blank pages"

2. Bank Certificate - My one year old savings account in BDO has PHP 150, 000 (last time I applied my savings account from BPI had 162K). I paid PHP 100 to request for bank certificate. (if you browse on the comment section below you'll see other employed applicants had around 60K in their savings account - still they were granted their visa. So I don't think it is necessary to have more than 100, 000 in your bank account esp for a 7 day stay) (READ MORE ABOUT BANK CERTIFICATE FOR VISA HERE)

3. Income Tax Return (2016) - I submitted photocopies of all the 15 pages of my ITR (forms 1701 and 2307 - because independent contractors like me fall under self-employed category) (If you are a company employee, you'd need to submit your one page form 2316).

4. Photos with my Guarantor - I submitted 15 different photos. This should be a photocopy (You can have the photos photocopied at RELI TOURS OFFICE)

5. Guarantee Letter - This letter comes from my Japanese Guarantor. My guarantor also sent original copy of his residence certificate and certificate of employment.

6. Invitation Letter - My Japanese guarantor sent a letter stating why he is inviting me to Japan. It's handwritten in English with his affixed signature (SEAL).

7. Photocopy of online conversations - I submitted conversations  from Facebook and Skype. I just copied and pasted the chat history and have them printed.

8. Daily Schedule in Japan - I downloaded this form and filled in my daily activities.

9. Printout of flight information - I got my round trip ticket 6 months prior to my VISA application. (They say buying plane ticket doesn't guarantee approval of your visa but I thought maybe it helps so yeah I did buy my ticket)

10. NSO Birth Certificate - I submitted original NSO birth certificate (issued year 2016). I needed to request for a new one because they don't accept BCs issued a year ago or earlier.

11. Visa Application Form - I got this form from RELI Tours office on the same day I submitted my documents. I filled the form neatly, filled it while I was waiting for my turn (to submit my documents). I used black sign pen. I pasted the photo on the upper right corner box. Photo should be 4.5cm x 4.5cm. I had my picture taken at PHOTOLINE. It's just a couple of steps away from Reli Tours office.

If you don't have someone from Japan to invite you/ guarantee your stay, you don't need to submit documents 5-8. Your COE and payslips together with your ITR are good enough if you are shouldering all your expenses. This should prove your capacity to fund your trip.

APPLICATION FEES

TOTAL EXPENSES for VISA APPLICATION: PHP 3190.00
  • Payment to the agency: Php 2500
  • Document photocopies: Php 110.00
  • ID Picture: Php 75.00
  • Bank Certificate request fee: Php 100.00
  • Photo printing: Php 75.00
  • NSO Birth Certificate: Php 330.00

I got my VISA 3 days after I filed my application!

Yay!!! My Japan Tourist VISA valid for 30 days stay!

Japan's beauty is beyond words. I encourage you to go there and see it for yourself. Just please, when you get there, practice self-discipline. Take pride in your country and show foreigners the good Filipino that you are. God bless your VISA application!

OTHER TIPS

*Don't forget to fill in the emergency contact info on the last page of your PASSPORT.
*Don't let the waiting time for your VISA APPLICATION result cause you stress and discomfort. CHILL! If you submitted all the correct documents, there is no way you'll get denied.

Beyond birdwatching: 6 other fun things to do in LPPCHEA

$

The Las Piñas-Parañaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area (LPPCHEA) has been known to bird watchers and enthusiasts as a proper site to observe, photograph as well as study migratory and resident birds. But beyond birdwatching, visitors to LPPCHEA can enjoy temporary tranquility and other leisure activities too!

To those who are not familiar with LPPCHEA, it is the first critical habitat to be declared in the country, and the sixth Ramsar sitein the Philippines to date.

If you see the stand of mangroves along Coastal Road when you travel to Cavite or down south, that place is part of LPPCHEA's sprawling 175 hectares of wetland ecosystem. It has two areas: the Long Island in Las Piñas and the Freedom Island in Parañaque. Breaking it down further, the 114 hectares are composed of mud flats, 30 hectares consist of mangroves, and about 2 kilometers by the beach area.

We had the chance to visit this place as part of the itinerary of the Media Familiarization trip to NCR initiated by Philippine Department of Tourism– Office of Public Affairs, Communications, and Special Projects (DOT-OPACSP). Other places included were: Malabon City for food and heritage tricycle toursSarao Motors Jeepney Factory, Bamboo Organ, Container Turf in BF Homes Parañaque.

Photo opp in Freedom Island trail with some fellow writers who took part in the media fam. trip to NCR. (L-R) Roger Pe of Business Mirror, Joel Andrada of Skin Care Addict, Carmela Nery of Seekertravels, Robertzon Ramirez of Philippine Star

LPPCHEA is situated south of Manila bay along the coastal lagoon of Las Piñas. As I've mentioned, the LPPCHEA is known for birdwatching. But if you are wondering what other fun things you can do here, I have come up with 6 alternative things for you in case you visit this natural reserve!

6 fun things to do in LPPCHEA

Sir Teddy Pelaez reading LPPCHEA Freedom Island direction sign

1. Eco-walk in the Freedom Island

You won't probably get high on excitement (like I would), but your senses, definitely, would benefit from the walk along this nature trail. The tall trees, the fallen dried leaves, the fresh smell of the earth after the rain, and the seclusion altogether are calming. Thirty minutes here and you'd feel like a weeklong stress has been rid off your system!

2. Get acquainted with Philippine indigenous trees

The Freedom Island nature trail showcases Philippine indigenous trees such as: Mangkono, Banaba, Narra, Kamuning, Aguho, Talisay, Molave, Neem Trees that deter mosquitos, Rubber trees, and my favorite Fire Trees, to name a few. In this trail, people (especially young people) can learn about these trees and see how they look like.

3. Do a photoshoot in the Boardwalk

Perhaps people would easily identify this place called "Boardwalk" with LPPCHEA due to its unique characteristic. As far as I know, there's no other place in Metro Manila with a pathway like this—elevated and concrete that stretches along a scenic view of mangroves.

In the middle of the Boardwalk is a Nipa Hut where visitors can rest for a bit and while still enjoying the view of endemic trees and mangroves. Strike a pose here, photograph your OOTD against the earth colors, just remember to avoid wearing overly vibrant clothes!

Well... you can do better poses... but make sure to not wear anything too vibrant

How many species of mangroves are grown in LPPCHEA? At present, there are eleven (11): Bungalon, Bakauan Babae, Bakauan Bato, Pototan, Kolasi, Pagatpat, Banalo, Tabigi, Saging-saging, Buta-Buta, and Nilad. These mangroves are "critical spawning grounds, nursery, feeding and temporary shelter areas, not only to fishes but other wildlife species as well. They also act as barriers against storm surges and high tide for the coastal communities of Parañaque and Las Piñas" (LPPCHEA brochure).

4. Watch the sunset at the beach area

Sunset views are always amazing. If you happen to still be in LPPCHEA past 5 o'clock, then might as well enjoy the sky turn into the warm shades of gold and red. Be mesmerized by the view of Manila Bay during sunset and at dusk.

Some areas in LPPCHEA (esp the coastal area) still need a lot of cleaning

5. Take part in coastal clean up and tree-planting activities

If you want to make a difference and help in protecting LPPCHEA, you may participate in scheduled clean-up drives as well as tree-planting activities. Follow LPPCHEA's website or DENR-NCR official Facebook page for upcoming events.

6. Create memories in this nature reserve

Different experiences await you whenever you visit a place. It's up to you to turn these experiences into something great and truly memorable. In LPPCHEA, you can give yourself time to commune with nature. You can also bond with your family by seeing, listening to, smelling, admiring, and feeling the surroundings. Take lots of pictures. Or maybe this hearts' season you can propose marriage or propose a relationship to your beloved under the canopy of tall trees?!

Quick tips and reminders for LPPCHEA visitors

Mr. Carlito Catañeda, the site manager of LPPCHEA, notes some tips and reminders for keen visitors:

1. Avoid bird attacks by not wearing bright-colored clothes inside the ecosite.
2. Don’t throw trash in the area.
3. Don't pick flowers, leaves or any planting materials from the area.
4. Keep noises down.
5. Take only memories! Leave only footprints!

Mr. Catañeda says there are laid-down plans to further develop LPPCHEA. These include the construction of a wetland center with a bird museum as well as the completion of the recently finished waiting area.

Artsy bird viewing deck in LPPCHEA

How to get there

LPPCHEA is still discussing with the DOT to consider a Shuttle Service for tourists going to the eco site.

For now, you may access the place via Cavitex. Refer to this site for detailed directions to LPPCHEA from the top locations in Manila using bus and train.

Airport Departure Guide for First-Time Travelers

$

If you are eager to read through then I assume you will soon board a plane and travel outside the Philippines FOR THE FIRST TIME. Are you excited to travel out of the country? Nervous to talk to the immigration officers in NAIA? Anxious you'd forget something important? Almost clueless of what to do when you arrive at the airport? I completely get you. I had the same mixed emotions the first time I traveled

Truth be told, my very first flight departure experience was memorable for all the wrong reasons.

In a nutshell, I was detained at the immigration center; I almost missed my flight. Not that I didn't do my homework of knowing the airport procedures for my departure, it's just that I felt overwhelmed and yeah, things got out of hand...

You see there are so many things going on at the airport. With a stream of passengers everywhere, announcements and noises to keep your attention, it's necessary you know what to do and where to go BY HEART.

In this post, let me share a guide on stress-free airport departure procedures in Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminals. My reference for this post would mainly be my personal experience—things I learned the hard way—and some NAIA airport guides.

Naturally, after securing travel documents and packing your stuff, you leave your house and head to the airport.

STEP 1 - Initial Security Check

A. Head to the Airport entrance.

Get off the taxi/ bus/ PUV. Take your luggage with you. If a person in uniform offers you help, you can opt to let him BUT know that you have to pay PHP 50 afterwards. It is his job as a “porter” even if he doesn't tell you beforehand. In some domestic airports, some people will offer help then ask for a tip. In such case you can give at least PHP20 depending on how far and how heavy your stuff is. DON’T FORGET to keep an eye on your belongings though.

PRO TIP: Ready your Passport and printed itinerary. Present it to the security personnel upon entrance.

B. At the entrance, expect tons of passengers in line (especially at TERMINAL 1) to enter the airport building.

Choose the entrance that corresponds to the airline company in your itinerary. Look at the signs above your head. Though you can practically enter at any entrance gate, it is civilized to pass through your designated point of entry.

Prepare your itinerary/ boarding pass and Passport. If you are traveling domestic, ready your itinerary/ boarding pass and Valid ID. Show them politely to the security and enter the building.

C. Upon entering, place all your belongings to the conveyor belt and let them pass through the x-ray machine.

PRO TIP: Use the trays for your small items (i.e mobile phones, belt, shoes, etc).

As this happens, step through the metal detector and have yourself inspected by the officer. It doesn’t really take long. After you are clear, promptly get your stuff and return the tray that you used to its proper place.

STEP 2 - Obtain Check-in details from flight information screen

A. After the initial security check, head to the nearest flight information monitor.

It is the screen that shows flight information, designated check-in counters and other related info about a passenger’s flight.

B. Look up your flight number on the screen and see your check-in counter. The check-in counter opens usually 2 hours before an international flight and an hour before a domestic flight.

So you will see a table with Flight number – check-in counter – status.

Something like this:

Flight No.Destination Counter Status
PR 5678MNL - NRTE4-E9OPEN
5J 5570MNL -BKKT-V--

*this is just sample table, based on how I remember it

So if your flight is PR 5678 bound for NRT from MNL, you can check-in at counters E4, E5, E6, E7, E8 or E9.

If your flight is 5570 check in counter is not yet open. You have to wait. If it opens, your check-in counter would be any counter from T to V. It’s not so difficult. I believe you’ll be able to figure it out easily.

STEP 3 - Payment of Travel Tax and Terminal Fee

A. BEFORE PROCEEDING TO YOUR CHECK-IN COUNTER for check-in, I STRONGLY SUGGEST you pay the tax and terminal fee first.

The cashier is in the far left end of NAIA Terminal 3. For terminal 2 here it is

In most cases the counters are jam-packed with passengers, you'd have to wait in line for a couple of minutes. At the counter you'd be asked to show your passport, itinerary and travel tax receipt. That means if you check-in first before paying the tax, you'd have to go out of the check-in area again, go to the tax section, queue, pay, go back to the check-in area again, queue, present your receipt... do you get my point?

BASICALLY it should be

TAX/ TERMINAL FEE PAYMENT >> CHECK-IN

and not the other way around. Some security personnel direct passengers to the check-in counters without asking them whether they’ve paid the tax and terminal fee already, as a result the passenger/passengers would experience the inconvenience. So I am telling you, pay the travel tax and terminal fee first before you check-in.

A.1 HOW TO PAY TAX AND TERMINAL FEE [READ HERE: HOW TO PAY TRAVEL TAX ONLINE]

Look at the sign, there should be step 1 or First Step. Line up. Wait for your turn. If it is your turn, show your passport and your boarding pass/ itinerary. Answer the question if asked such as “where are you travelling?” then pay PHP 1620. Wait for the receipt. Politely say thank you after the transaction.

Step 4 - Check-in your Baggage

A. Go to your designated counter and check-in.

Hand your itinerary/ printed boarding pass, TERMINAL FEE/TAX receipt and PASSPORT to the airport crew.

PRO TIP: If you check-in online you can queue on web check-in counter.

After checking in, you’ll be given your BOARDING PASS with your corresponding GATE NO. and BOARDING TIME. The airport staff will confirm the details on your boarding pass and make sure you understand the said details.

Do not forget your gate number.

And DO NOT LOSE your boarding pass.

Step 5 - Immigration

A. Get past the check-in counters and head to the immigration. Don't be confused. As for directions,  follow the person ahead of you or ask an airport officer.

At the immigration area, you’d be needing to fill out a DEPARTURE FORM.

PRO TIP: If there are many people, fill out the DEPARTURE FORM while in line especially if you are in a hurry. USE BLACK BALLPOINT PEN. WRITE LEGIBLY AND NEATLY.

B. Proceed to the Bureau of Immigration officer window. Hand your departure card and passport to the officer. No need to show your boarding pass/ return ticket unless asked.

Answer the immigration officer's queries. DO NOT TAKE THIS PERSONALLY especially when the officer is sounding indifferent or hostile. It is just another airport SOP.

The usual question would be: Where will you go? Who will you travel with? What is your job? Where will you stay? When will you go back to the Philippines?

Bureau of Immigration officers will sound serious. They are not supposed to be friendly so again, do not take this personally. Make sure to be calm, honest and polite. They can deny you to board the plane (for legal reasons) so exercise your manners. Wait for them to stamp your Passport. If you are a DOST scholar who has not applied for clearance yet, this post is for you.

Step 6 - Final Security Check

A. After you get your Passport stamped, proceed to the final  security check.

Again, place your stuff in the conveyor belt (your small belongings into a tray) and have them scanned. Step through the metal detector for self-inspection. After you are clear, get your stuff, put the tray back to its proper place. Politely say thank you to the officers if they help you out.

Step 7 - Boarding

A. Go to your assigned boarding gate and calmly wait at the lounge for your boarding time.

B. Board the plane.

You might need to queue again. But listen to the announcement about which seats to go in first. Normally passengers by the window go in first or rows 16-28 take the rear entrance.

Pay attention to the announcements made at the airport. It may come in handy for sudden changes like if your boarding gate is changed or your flight is delayed, etc. Queue, SHOW YOUR BOARDING PASS to the airport crew and then get on the plane.

Avoid taking photos in the ramp! BECAUSE!

And do not board the wrong plane!!!
